As a Contemporary Textile Artist Julie studied Art then City and Guilds Stitched Textiles locally and with Opus Textile School London and Middlesex University gaining BA Hons in Embroidery and Mixed Media in 2010.  Since then she has exhibited with selected artists at The Mall Gallery in London, Whitstable and Harrogate, as a member of international Textile group “Prism” founded by Julia Caprara. Her intentions now include developing her very personal style of ethereal hand stitched pieces with a dedication to more local themes.

The passing of time and the ability of cloth to hold memory and personal histories is a recurring theme. Attachments to people and place are evident in inclusion of specific fragments and patterns. Julie’s work develops fragility and loss.  With hand stitching, patching and repairing surfaces an appreciation of the worn and cherished in cloth and clothing is evident. Using frayed and torn edges and surfaces she creates pieces bearing evidence of living a life. Human contact and time passing give an individual perspective. Delicate and fragile pieces are created in silks, dyed and artificially worn then rebuilt with the special closeness of hand stitching. Influences include Japanese ‘Boro’ textiles and old Manx domestic textiles both have time worn clothing and quilts.
